Alberta Teachers Association Criticizing New Mandatory Assessments For Students

The Alberta Teachers Association is criticizing the introduction of mandatory assessments for kindergarten students, saying they have limited value to students, and put an additional burden on teachers.

The assessments began this month, and grades one and three screenings began in September.

Association President Jason Schilling says the tests contain material kindergarten students haven’t yet learned, and contributes to frustration among students.

He adds many teachers have found the results unclear and unhelpful.

Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides insists the screenings are backed by scientific research, and can identify 95 per cent of those students who will later develop reading difficulties.
