Federal party leaders will take part in two televised debates before the April 28th election.
A French-language event will be held April 16th, with the English debate the following evening.
Political parties must meet two of three requirements to participate.
The party must have had an elected MP on the date the election was called…..they must be polling at least four per cent support, and they must have candidates in at least 90 per cent of federal ridings as of the beginning of April.
The list of participants will be announced on April 1st.
Meeting two of three requirements is a new threshold established this year by the Leaders’ Debates Commission.
For the last federal election, in 2021, the parties only had to meet one of those three conditions.
People’s Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier argues the change is aimed at keeping him out of the debates.
His party doesn’t have an elected MP, and is polling below four per cent nationally.
