Oil and gas wells across Alberta are being safely shut down and cleaned up.
In 2022, 8,000 wells were marked inactive, and 4,500 were fully reclaimed. Now, Canadian Natural Resources is planning to abandon and reclaim nine wells in Elk Point.
These wells were drilled in 2011 and 2012 on town-owned land near the landfill. The process includes sealing the wells, removing equipment, and testing the land.
Once the site is safe and restored, it can return to its original use—like farming.
