May was the busiest month on record for Alberta when it comes to housing starts reported.
According to new data from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation, last month there were a historic 4,113 housing starts reported in the province.
Alberta’s housing boom is being fueled by its two largest cities with substantial numbers of new homes under construction as part of this growth.
For Edmonton in May of this year there were 1,830 new housing starts, which represents an increase of more than 110 per cent over May of 2023.
According to a press release, Calgary had almost 2,000 housing starts in May of 2024, which is consistent with last year’s numbers for that same time period.
Jason Nixon, Alberta’s Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services, says this unprecedented growth shows the province is leading the country in having the fastest permit approval times and the fewest roadblocks to building homes. The MLA for Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House Sundre adds, they will continue to support their housing partners and make sure they go from permits issued to shovels in the ground, and finally to new homes ready for Albertans.
Total housing starts in Alberta from January to May of this year have reached 17,673.
