APCCA Driver From Mannville Gearing Up For 2024 Season’s Biggest Events

The Alberta Professional Chuckwagon and Chariot Association will celebrate the Canada Day long weekend with three days of racing in Sedgewick.
Races will go Saturday, Sunday, and on Canada Day Monday (June 29th-July 1st).
Chuckwagon Driver Shane Cartier from Mannville is 8th in the standings so far this year.
Cartier was pleased with how things went last weekend in Paradise Valley. He says “Yeah it was. It was really nice and warm and yeah, it was a good weekend. I think there was very few penalties, there were no accidents. I think everyone had a good time and we didn’t have to worry about rain or any other kinda stuff that comes along. So just a nice warm one. So went well. The horses ran good. We had a couple outside trips and still ended up 6th or 7th in the average, or something. So we were very happy.”
He will be giving his horses a rest this weekend, in order to be ready for a busy stretch of racing in July. Cartier says “These are coming into my favourite run of shows. I’m going to Viking. Buck Lake is actually the following weekend, so I’m going to stay home from that one. It’s just a little too short a track for my horses. So that’ll be weekend off, running weekend, a weekend off. Like I said, I’m only packing four (horses). So my main goal every year is to make sure I’m running as good as possible for Red Deer, Vermilion, and Vegreville as that is where my biggest paying sponsors are. To me they are our biggest shows.”
APCCA events after the Canada Day long weekend in Sedgewick include July 5th through the 7th in Viking, July 13th and 14th in Buck Lake, July 17th to the 21st in Red Deer at Westerner Days, and July 25th until the 27th in Vermilion.
August will begin with four days of racing in Vegreville from the 7th through the 9th.
