The Canadian Medical Association has formally apologized for the harm the medical profession has caused Indigenous people.
At a ceremony in Victoria, B.C., attended by First Nations, Métis, and Inuit representatives, the Association expressed its deep shame over the profession’s history of racism, neglect, and abuse.
They admitted to harmful practices like Indian hospitals, forced medical experiments, sterilization, and child removals.
The Association plans to track its progress in fixing these wrongs and will provide regular updates on its Indigenous health initiatives.
