The Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Foundation will be unveiling a new monument commemorating Canada’s First World War Internment Operations for the years 1914 to 1920 this month in Vegreville. The Monument marks the latest installment of commemorative and educational markers across Alberta placed by the UCCLF. Chairman of the UCCLF Borys Sydoruk says that these monuments are meant to be an educational tool for Canadians to learn more about Canada’s past during World War I, and the difficulties that many Ukrainian Canadians and others suffered during that time.
Sydoruk adds that he hopes that viewing the Monument will inspire people to learn more about this piece of Canadian history that goes largely unspoken.
The unveiling of the First World War Internment Operations Monument will take place on Sunday, June 23rd at 2:30pm at Pysanka Park.
